Too many shoes?

Here’s an exercise in self-discipline: how many shoes are too many shoes? As the article mentions, we’re entering into the spring cleaning season and perhaps now is the time to create some space in our closets or at least take inventory of what’s lurking in there. If you’re like me, you’re definitely a “shoe girl” and you definitely don’t remember everything you have in your cramped walk-in closet. I took this opportunity to refresh my memory.

I own 27 pairs of shoes stored in a combination of boxes, dust covers and Ziplock freezer bags. I’m not counting a couple pairs of flip-flops because those seem to come and go at their own will. The article suggests that “the average American woman owns 19 pairs of shoes,” so I’m above average. As I was going through them, I noted that many of them are warm weather shoes (open toes, slingbacks). During cold weather, I do most of my standing in boots, of which I own four pairs. I also pulled aside the shoes that I haven’t worn in the last year or that clearly don’t fit me. (Add those to the pile of clothing to sell.) There are also one or two pairs I keep around because they’re “practical,” but I hardly ever wear. (Keep those.) Because I have so many shoes in my collection that never see the light of day, I think it’s fair to say at this point that I have too many shoes. But after a little thoughtful whittling, my collection was composed of 22 wearable pairs of shoes.

Final Verdict Having eliminated the shoes I can’t or won’t wear, if I regularly exercise (everyday or seasonal) the remaining 22 pairs, then I’m in pretty good shape. I don’t think the “too many” issue is determined by quantity (although perhaps there is a limit) as much as use. If you wear all of your shoes, you’re fine. If you don’t, it might be time to take a closer look at your wearing / spending habits.

Fall Shoe Love (Abbreviated)

Yay, fall.

Today was apple picking with Stork’s family and listening to Bauhaus on the drive home and moving an electric piano into our apartment and loving the way turning trees look while the sun sets.

Girl’s Best Friend

After a long day of holding a grudge against someone at work, it’s really nice to come home to a new pair of shoes. (And David Bowie—he makes things better, too.)

I got these Francesca Giobbi flats on sale. I still won’t say what I paid though, because I should probably be embarrassed—sale or no sale. The things we do for love…
